In the over-crowded streets of New York City, the subway is the top choice of commuting among residents, offering cheap and quick transportation around the Big Apple. Everything in New York City revolves around using public transit. Until recently, commuters were allowed to bring their dogs on board with them.
But a couple of years ago, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority put a policy in place that prohibits dogs to travel on the subway unless they fit into a carrier or bag. The thinking on this was that this ban would prevent large dogs from riding with their owners.
Well, New Yorkers weren’t having it! The Transportation Authority didn’t designate bag size, and as it turns out, dogs will fit inside most bags. With no dog size specified either, New York residents showed they were definitely creative enough and up to the task.
The results were both adorable and hilarious. People were seen with their dogs in backpacks, briefcases, and tote bags of all shapes and sizes. A little policy crackdown isn’t going to stop New York residents from traveling with their canine friends.
Cute little pups like this are seen in their owner’s backpacks every day on the subway.
In a city that serves millions of subway riders every year, social media was filled with images of people toting their dogs in carriers. Everything from ordinary to totally ridiculous showed up on Facebook and Instagram. New Yorkers were so clever, the whole thing went viral on Twitter, with a hashtag #dogsinbags trending at one point.
The next time you’re in New York and find yourself on the subway, take a look around. You may see some furry friends putting traveling “in the bag!”
