Not all heroes wear capes, some come in the form of young boys that spend their time
reading to abandoned dogs.
Meet Evan. B, a 10-year old boy from New York City who spends his weekends reading to
distressed dogs in rescue centers. He’s been at it since August of last year and he intends to
keep on doing it until he has a rescue center of his own. And by that time, he hopes that New
York is already a no-kill state.
It all started when his mom rescued an abandoned dog that was tied to a fence. Upon
bringing the dog to the Animal Care Center, his mom also found out about the center’s
volunteer program.
Evan had always wanted to work with dogs and he got excited when his mom told him of such
opportunity. He was so happy that he would have the chance to actually get to read to dogs.
Upon starting his volunteer journey, it was then that he fell in love all the more with reading for
abandoned dogs. He sensed how sad and weary all the dogs were and it made him so happy
whenever he would get to read for them and be a friend to them even for just a few hours
during weekends.
In Evan’s volunteer journey, he noticed that dogs calm down and get relaxed once he starts
reading for them. They get less anxious and scared of the wild and noisy environment in the
shelter. And this is the very essence of the program, to provide relief, love, and joy to shelter
dogs.
He shared how one of the most rewarding thing in his volunteer work is whenever he would
see dogs get so relaxed as he reads that they even fall asleep. He also brings toys for the
dogs.
Apart from reading to dogs, Evan also helped in raising funds for the shelter by selling shirts.
Last year, he was able to raise $1,000 for the center. He intends to raise funds again this year.
