Garbage is a significant issue that the world is trying to tackle. It harms physical habitats and aquatic life, and keeping beaches clean can be challenging. However, if we all work together, we can win the battle against pollution. Imagine the power of humans and dogs working together to clean up beaches – it would speed up the process and make it more joyful.
Many dog owners have already involved their pets in beach clean-ups, including Molly the Labrador. Molly and her owner, Fliss Cater, have collected trash from their local English beach with patience and hard work. The idea of letting Molly help with beach clean-ups came up when she was still a puppy. She had a habit of looking for and playing with pieces of trash, so Fliss encouraged her to collect all the trash she found in a trash bag. Since then, they have been picking up trash daily, using small bags first and then upgrading to giant bin liners.
Molly loves the activity so much that she does not even ask for snacks in return. Hearing her owner say, “Good girl, Molly,” is enough for her, motivating her to keep doing what she does. In 2017, Fliss and Molly moved to Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where they were shocked by the amount of garbage they found on the beach. They continued their mission and trained for a few months before returning to their routine.
They always find broken toys, ropes, and plastic bottles, sometimes even sharp objects. However, Fliss taught Molly some commands for her safety, and they always go outside with gloves and a bin liner. Although Molly was trained well, she still cannot distinguish between an empty bottle and a full one. Sometimes, she returns with a filled bottle, which Fliss then returns to its owner if possible.
Molly has become a celebrity after being seen daily and admired by people. Fliss and Molly hope their initiative will inspire others to clean the beach and think twice before littering. They will continue their mission until they see that the beach is garbage-free.
