When owning pets, you don’t have to choose between a dog and a cat. You can even have a dog and a cat for pets – together, living harmoniously under the same roof. All you need to do is to see to it that you can combine the personalities of both species so that they will love each other.
In this article, we have compiled a list of canine breeds that can pretty get along with their feline counterparts.
1. Golden Retrievers
The breed is highly intelligent and can be easy to train. They are very friendly and can get along really well with children and other pet animals. Generally, many experts would suggest that you introduce a cat and a dog, when the dog is still a puppy or before he turns four months old.
Introducing both species at a much younger age can really help with them living together for a long period of time.
2. Basset Hound
Cats and Basset Hounds have something in common and that is their stubbornness. Hence, both can be great companions. Furthermore, Basset Hounds are very mild mannered and friendly. They only require minimal physical activities and can live longer compared to other canines. After a meal, they tend to sleep than play. They are not that energetic, which make cats tolerate a canine breed in their presence.
3. Bichon Frise
The breed can be really small, and may sometime be outweighed by a cat. They are incredibly active and very cuddly. However, they don’t like to be alone. That is why they make a great company for your cats who love to sleep on your bed all day. But, we don’t recommend Bichon Frise if you have an older cat. They are alright with kittens though.
4. Beagle
Beagles are very active, but they know how to differentiate outdoors to indoors. This means they play all they want when outdoors but know how to stay calm when indoors. They are very friendly and see other pet animals as family members. The only downside is that they tend to howl. This can pose a problem especially if your cat doesn’t like loud noises and may scare easily. You may want to keep this mind and consider the breed carefully.
If you let your dog and cat socialize early, the better they become more loving towards each other.
5. Pug
Pugs make great companions not only to humans but also to other pet animals. They love life so to speak and can be extremely easy-go-lucky. The breed doesn’t need a lot of exercises and would prefer to lie around waiting for you to come home. This makes the breed an excellent companion for your cat.
6. Labrador Retrievers
Also called Labs, the breed is very friendly and knows how to live with other pets. They can play gently with smaller animals and knows when to give other pets their space when they need it. They love to interact with other creatures not only because they want to play or lonely, but because they want to bond with you.
