As a dog owner, you probably don’t want your dog to be infested with ticks. Ticks aren’t just annoying but these little creatures also spread diseases. Such diseases can be serious and can even threaten the life of your dog. Preventing ticks from getting into your dog is possible. How? Here are some ways.
1. Learn which season is “tick season”
Ticks are prevalent all year round but there is a certain season where there are a lot of them. The time of the year where there are a lot of ticks depends on the place or region. In order for you to find out which time of the year do ticks are the greatest in number, ask your veterinarian about it.
2. Use tick prevention products
Thankfully, there are a lot of tick prevention products that are easily available in the market today. While tick collars work, it isn’t exactly a great idea for dogs who are into swimming. There are also monthly medications to kill or lessen ticks which can be administered orally or applied topically.
3. Frisk your dog daily
If possible, do a tick check to your dog every day and of course, have them removed already. Perhaps, the easiest and first thing that you can do as a dog owner is to check on the ticks of your dogs and have them removed. Eliminating the ticks will prevent your dog from getting any disease most especially the serious ones. Check out the ticks’ favorite places in your dog’s body – neck, head, and ears. These are usually the ones that are embedded with ticks.
4. Remove embedded ticks promptly and properly
Just like in anything else, give your best when you are ticks from your dog. The lesser the time is that the tick is attached to your dog, the lesser is the chance of your dog from getting any disease caused by ticks. There are a lot of online results on how you can remove an embedded tick but most of them are not really working. Consulting your veterinarian on what you should do is still the best way to know what you can do about the ticks of your dog.
While keeping your dog tick-free is nearly impossible, preventing them from multiplying in number is possible. The number of ways that you can do to achieve it is close to a hundred or thousand. Remember, a clean and tick-free dog is a healthy dog.
