Each year, retrievers, Labs, and German shepherds make it to the list of America’s most popular breeds which is released by American Kennel Club. The dogs at the top get all of the attention, while the dogs at the bottom of the list rarely get noticed. It is safe to say that the dogs on the bottom of the list are the least known dogs. One of them is the Norwegian Lundehund, a dog that is more than its status or rank on the list.
Lundehund dogs are rarely seen in the streets of America. This is because there is only around 350 of them in America. In fact there are only 1,400 Lundehunds in the entire world. These dogs look like wolves one coyote with the quick feet and body of a fox. This dog breed has six toes – four of which are facing forward, while the other two are facing to the side and back of the paw which makes them appear more like dual thumbs. Lundehunds are also very flexible. This may sound crazy, but they can touch the top of their head to their spine.
Historically, Lundehunds are hunting dogs especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, but they became less useful to the hunter as the method of hunting changed. These dogs are naturally alert, inquisitive, and cheerful. Most of the time, they are sweet and gentle to strangers and rarely become aggressive. They are also very independent. They make great house companions, but training them can be difficult as they sometimes exhibit behaviors similar to wild dogs or wolves. Lundehunds also bark a lot, so if you are a big fan of silent places, this dog is not for you.
The bottom line is that Lundehunds can be great if fitted to the owner, but a new owner needs to be prepared for the traits of this particular dog breed. Thorough research needs to be done on this dog before bringing a Lundehund into your home as a new pet. If your family is prepared for a Lundehund, you will be getting a beautiful, rare dog.
