A teacup puppy named Olivia was born without front legs. Thus, her breeder didn’t see any use for her and brought her to animal control services in West Virginia, asking them to euthanize the poor pup. However, the staff looked at Olivia and did not want to end her life.
With the help of an animal rescue organization called Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, the pup feels joyful and confident. Getting around is challenging for her, but volunteers want to make her life much easier. Soon, the tiny pooch will have a wheelchair!
Olivia is under one year of age and only weighed half a pound upon arriving at the shelter. She underwent orthopedic examinations and X-rays, the results of which determined she required a wheelchair.
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is working with a company dedicated to building orthotic and prosthetic devices to create a customized wheelchair for Olivia.
The customized wheelchair will arrive in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, Olivia is enjoying her time in her foster home.
The tiny pup has no idea that she is different from other dogs. Olivia is quite a bundle of energy and does not let her problems or disabilities hold her back.
The founder of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Sue Bell, hopes that the pup’s story reminds others about the dangers of reckless breeding.
According to Bell, breeding teacup animals has negative impacts, as well as overbreeding of any kind. She said that when people plan to get a dog from a breeder, they should visit the breeder and check how they keep the animals. They should ensure that the breeders are reputable.
As for Olivia, she is not available for adoption yet; however, she will likely be once her customized wheelchair arrives. After all, the tiny dog is doing better than anyone could have expected.
