What makes dogs great as companions is that they will always be there for us. They don’t judge us on whatever we do, and they will remain loyal and faithful no matter what happens to our lives. It’s safe to say that dog owners will stand by their pet dogs and say that their dogs help them cheer up whenever they feel down or depressed.
A great example is a dog named Atlas. Atlas is a service dog for Julian Gavino. Although Atlas is a trained service dog who helps Julian with his day to day activities, he’s also a true friend for Julian. When Julian was twenty years old, he was diagnosed with EDS, which is short for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
EDS affects the connective tissues. It causes the skin to be very stretchy, and simple wounds can have unusual scar formation. In Julian’s case, it affected his joints to the point where he wasn’t able to do a lot of things by himself. He needed assistance, which was why he got Atlas.
Julian is also a transgender person who underwent sex-reassignment surgery. Julian didn’t get a lot of support from his parents, which caused him great sadness. However, when he met Atlas, he knew that Atlas would always be there for him. When Julian woke up from surgery, the first thing he saw was Atlas sitting by his side.
For Julian, it was the most heartwarming thing he ever experienced. To help Julian recover, Atlas was there to get him clothes and socks to get ready for the day. Atlas would even take clean clothes from the laundry whenever Julian needs it. Atlas also grab things from the floor, which Julian drops as well as get medications.
Despite being a service dog, Atlas still has a bit of sense of humor that makes his dad laugh. Atlas does a lot of silly things that make Julian happy. Atlas reminds Julian that all he needs is love. Atlas also helped Julian to be confident and believe in himself.
Thanks to Atlas, Julian gained the confidence to learn how to walk again. To reward Atlas, Julian decided to take Atlas to Disneyland to meet Pluto, who is actually his favorite toy. Atlas was so excited to meet Pluto in real life. Here’s an adorable video showing how Atlas helped Julian during his time of need.
