Heather Von Seggern was walking her Golden Retriever when she spotted a small scraggly dog strolling in their neighborhood. The little pooch was in terrible shape with her hair all matted and dirty. While some people may do anything to avoid such a rough-looking dog, Heather decided to help him and brought the dog home with her.
Heather said she really felt sorry for the dog. It looked like it was either neglected or abused. When they got home, she cleaned and fed him, then looked for ways to find its owner. She chose Lost Pet Services, Inc., a non-profit group that maintains a social media presence that helps reconnect people with their lost pets.
Six years ago
Virginia Bell never knew whether her beloved pet was lost or stolen. Not that it mattered, she was heartbroken that her Spanky, a Shih Tzu, was missing. Like most responsible dog owners, she searched diligently for her dog but never found him.
They tried many different ways to find Spanky, but they came up with nothing. After a few years of hoping, Virginia finally had to accept that her dog was gone forever. He got a new dog and even named one Spanky, in honor of her lost Shih Tzu.
Then after six years, Virginia received a startling call.
Found!
When Virginia answered her phone, she got the strangest conversation. The lady, on the other side, said that they had Spanky with them. She called out to her Yorkie right away, and she came trotting towards her. It didn’t occur to Virginia then that it was her lost dog that they were calling about.
Feeling that it was someone pulling a prank on her, she hung up on the call. But then, after mulling about the call, she realized that the caller might have been talking about her Shih Tzu. She excitedly called back.
She got in touch with Patty Giarusso, who was part of Lost Pet Services, Inc. When Heather turned over the dog to them, they had her scanned, and they found Virginia’s contact number and address. After talking for several minutes, they figured that it was indeed her Spanky from before. Virginia was overjoyed.
Spanky, who was renamed Gizmo to avoid confusion, was finally home.
