We absolutely adore our beloved dogs. We, dog owners, spoil them as much as we can. We shower them with love and affection, and we make sure they have everything they need. Sometimes, we also give them what they want. Like for example, they want some toys to play with. We are quick to give them any toy they wish to have.
Take note however, that there are dog toys which can potentially harm our dogs. Some common dog toys that are usually available in the market, can be dangerous to play with, most specially if these toys are not maintained or if left for the dogs to gnaw and chew without supervision.
Just like toys for kids, toys for dogs should be checked for choking, swallowing, or inhaling hazards. It is very important that a dog owner check the toys that are available in pet shops and grocery stores. There are dog toys with tiny decorations and parts. We all know how dogs enjoy chewing and gnawing on stuff, and the possibility of them choking is something to be taken seriously. So when you see toys with choking hazard parts, or parts that are worn out, do not buy them anymore.
Check the Dog Ball Toys that you Purchase
Dogs absolutely love balls! They just love to play catch, so it is not so surprising to know that balls are among the most common dog toys sold in pet shops and grocery stores. However, they can still be potentially hazardous to our pets. If the ball is small, it can be a potential choke hazard. Dog owners can resort to tennis balls for they are safe to play with. Dogs can’t really swallow them because of their size and their fuzzy texture.
Dog Bones can also be Choke Hazards
Rule of the thumb when giving your dogs some bones: give them big ones to avoid swallowing them whole. Dog owners are also advised not to give their dogs bones of poultry animals or rib bones because they tend to break easily. These bones, once splintered, may yield to sharp bits, which are dangerous for dogs to gnaw or chew. Always remember to check on your pet while he is gnawing on a bone, just to be safe. In the unfortunate event that your dog swallows a piece of bone, bring him or her to the vet immediately for urgent medical attention.
Who knew Stuffed Toys Can Be Hazardous?
We could never guess that even stuffed animal toys can be dangerous for our pets. Generally, soft stuffed toys or plushies ARE safe. But when ripped or torn, small parts such as button eyes and even the soft ripened parts and the cotton stuffing are choking hazards. Although these toys are marked safe for kids, a dog owner would think it is also safe for dogs. They are, but also take note, kids and dogs have different idea of play.
There are loads of way to secure your dog’s safety during playtime. One of the constant reminders of vets for dog owners is to supervise them. It is always helpful to be with them (or better yet, play with them!)
At the end of the day, always remember that no amount of toy can replace you as their best playmate.
