The World Health Organization recently released a statement declaring that there is absolutely no evidence that dogs can acquire the new coronavirus strain. The WHO made it clear that there is no evidence that points to the possibility of dogs and cats catching the new coronavirus strain, hence, it’s impossible for them to pass on any form of coronavirus strain to humans.
However, there is a type of coronavirus strain that dogs can catch but cannot pass to people. It’s been around since the 1970s and it’s not linked at all to the current outbreak. Just recently, this canine coronavirus strain has been going around. Just this month in Australia, a group of greyhounds were put in isolation after a sudden canine coronavirus outbreak.
To protect your beloved dogs and make sure that they don’t catch canine coronavirus, please make sure that you take note of the following important tips and points to consider:
1. Consistent washing of hands is still the way to go. Petting other dogs and then petting your own dog without washing your hands, is one sure way to pass on canine coronavirus. Hence, owners must make it a point to wash their hands before and after petting their own dogs and other dogs. Make sure that your hands are clean before and after petting your dog.
2. It’s important to isolate your dog once it begins to show any symptoms. This is to protect other dogs in and outside of your household from catching it, too.
3. Minimize dog-to-dog socialization and keep your dog away from other dogs that are showing symptoms.
4. Make sure that their kennel is clean at all times!
5. Give your dog a regular bath schedule.
6. Never let them stay in an area where there are animal poo.
7. Keep their feeding bowls clean and away from other dogs before and after mealtimes.
