Have you ever wondered exactly why your dog is such a great listener? Or how they can seem to know when to comfort you when you’re feeling down?
Well, this all comes down to the science of it all.
Based on a study published in the Current Biology journal states that dogs and humans have the same ability to listen to emotion when it is being communicated to them. This means that dogs can tell if a person or another animal around them is feeling happy or sad.
The study also suggests that we use the same brain mechanisms as dogs do when processing social interactions. This is the reason why it looks like your dog can understand what you are saying when you rant. That’s because they do!
Now there has also been a recent study where they took 24 dogs of different breeds along with their owners to test this theory. The owners were told to sit in a glass partition away from their dogs and to act distressed and relaxed (while humming) at varying times.
The dogs ran towards their owners 40 seconds faster when they were acting distressed than when they were just humming!
As with their behavior, the dogs seemed to get more agitated whenever their owners called out in distress. There were even some dogs who were so stressed out that they couldn’t even move.
This just goes to show just how strong the emotional bond we create with our dogs. It may not seem like it but what we feel and act around them also affects how they feel and act.
Because of this study, you now know that you and your dog have more in common than you think and that they are truly the best kind of friend that you could have.
