As we all know, beach garbage is one of the many issues the world attempts to diminish. It endangers aquatic life and harms physical habitats. However, keeping beaches clean can be a difficult task.
But if people work together, we can win the battle against pollution. Even better, imagine humans and dogs working together to complete this quest!
Many dog owners have already involved their dogs in beach clean-ups. For example, Molly the Labrador has been helping her owner clean beaches since she was just a puppy.
When she was young, Molly had a habit of looking for and playing with pieces of trash. That’s when her owner, Fliss Cater, had the bright idea to encourage Molly to collect and stuff all the junk she found in a trash bag.
Since then, they have been picking up trash every single day. They used small bags at first, then upgraded to giant bin liners. Fliss could see Molly’s happiness when they do their daily activity.
In 2017, the two moved to Scarborough, North Yorkshire. They would often walk on the beach nearby, and Fliss would see how much trash there was.
This inspired her to carry on with their mission. They trained for a few months before they returned to their regular garbage collection routine.
They would always find broken toys, ropes, and plastic bottles. Sometimes, they would even find sharp objects. Fortunately, Fliss made sure to teach Molly some commands for her safety.
Not a day passes that they do not have any litter to stuff in their bin liners. That is why they always go outside with it and some gloves.
However, while Molly was trained well, she needed help distinguishing between empty and full bottles.
Sometimes, Molly would return with a filled bottle. Fliss would then notice a person who was baffled and confused about the location of their drink! Thankfully, they never got in trouble for it.
After being seen every day at the beach and admired by people, Molly became a local celebrity. A lot of people even asked for a picture of her!
Fliss and Molly hope that their initiative inspires people to clean the beach and stop them from throwing trash anywhere without thought. Whether or not others join their quest, the pair is determined to continue their mission until the coast is garbage-free.
