The chilly months are here. And if you love dogs as much as we do, then we know that you’ve started applying care tips for your best buddy.
The following are the main care priorities that we do for our dogs and if you aren’t observing the same, then it’s time to do so:
1. Your best bud should be warm.
Your dog should always be properly insulated from the cold. Invest in a well-fitting dog coat or sweater for walks outdoors.
2. Your best bud’s paws should be protected.
Paws can suffer during cold weather. Have a dog-safe paw balm to avoid dryness. You should always wipe their paws clean after every walk.
3. Your best bud’s feeding time must be adjusted.
Due to the cold weather, your best bud may burn more calories. Ask your veterinarian if an adjustment is needed for your dog’s daily dietary needs.
4. Your best bud should have shorter walks and more breaks.
As it can get extremely cold, you should limit the length of your walks. Always be mindful of your dog’s level of comfort.
5. Your best bud should have indoor exercise.
You should provide indoor activities for your dog like puzzle feeders and interactive toys. They are perfect when outdoor playtime is limited.
6. Your best bud should not be over-bathed.
Be consistent with regular brushing but don’t over-bathe your dog as their skin’s natural oils can be stripped.
7. Your best bud should be free from ticks and fleas.
Despite being less active in the cold, parasites can still be a concern. You should have preventive treatments. Be consistent with your checks.
8. Your best bud should have supervised outdoor time.
Playing in the snow is wonderful. But always monitor for frostbite or any kind of distress or discomfort.
9. Your best bud should have an adequate shelter.
Your dog’s safe space should always be warm and dry. If your buddy stays in a doghouse, make sure that it is insulated.
10. Your best bud should be free from hypothermia.
Look for signs of hypothermia: lethargy, shivering, and cold extremities. Consult your vet if your dog shows the following signs. Keep your pet safe and warm at all times.
