In a news that shocked the world, Australia has been experiencing bush fires that is pushing koalas to the brink of extinction. Much has been burned in New South Wales, Australia but one dog is making everything so much better by doing his part. Meet Bear, he’s saving the world and melting everyone’s heart one saved koala at a time.
Bear is a six-year-old collie/koolie mix that is specially trained to search for and save orphaned, wounded, and abandoned koalas. His job was taken to the next level as he is currently deployed to save koalas in the ongoing bush fires in Australia.
Bear’s story is particularly touching as he was abandoned years ago by his owners who reasoned that they can no longer take care of him. Luckily, Detection Dogs for Conservation got hold of him and he passed all the tests required of elite koala search dogs.
Bear’s trainers are so amazed by him as he has the perfect traits and remarkable intelligence that gets the job done. He has been effectively trained to have no interest whatsoever in human interaction. Once he’s deployed, he has the ability to fully focus on detecting koalas through the smell of their fur.
He is perfect as he has no prey instincts. Upon detecting koalas, he does not mind them and keeps them fully safe. All he cares about is finding the smell and pointing out where wounded koalas are. Such trait has been pivotal in saving numerous wounded koalas in New South Wales, Australia.
Bear’s story illustrates love that has come in full circle. Knowing how it is to be abandoned and forsaken, Bear is now dedicating his life to help koalas who were abandoned as well. You’re a good boy, Bear! We all love you! We are all cheering for you! You go, Bear! You’re the best
