Caring for a dog is never a light matter. It requires commitment and dedication as keeping one entails time, responsibility, and expenses. This message needs to be stressed now more than ever in line with the startling statistics that show the negative effects of buying dogs in a whim.
Game of Thrones, HBO’s popular series that just finished airing its final season, has made a deep mark and influence in today’s pop culture. Almost all its effects are inspiring and positive, while some are heartbreaking and negative, like this matter. Ever since the popularity of the show, its fans have been keen on buying Siberian Huskies as the dog breed has strong resemblance with direwolves, mystical animals that were starred and featured as pets by the shows leading characters.
Since the running of the show, reports show that the number of abandoned Siberian Huskies in shelters have increased to 800% in the United Kingdom alone. In 2011, Blue Cross reported that there was only an average of 10 abandoned huskies per year. Ten years after its airing, the data has soared to 81 abandoned huskies per year. In the USA, LA shelters reported a 300% increase in the number of huskies since 2013.
Hence, the show’s leading actors, Peter Dinklage who played Tyrion Lannister and Jerome Flynn who played Bronn, are actively participating in pleas for fans to stop buying Siberian Huskies on a whim.
Peter Dinklage stressed how buying Huskies affect all the deserving abandoned dogs needing to be adopted on shelters. He explained that since the acquiring of Siberian Huskies are done in a whim, they end up getting abandoned and are now added to the number of poor dogs that need love and attention since their former owners failed to see how they have specific special needs as hearty and big dog breeds.
Jerome Flynn stressed that more and more Siberian Huskies are being bred and bought due to their appearance alone. This led to an alarming surge in the increased numbers of abandoned Huskies globally for casual acquirers fail to consider how taking care of Siberian Huskies is particularly demanding.
So if you have friends and know of people who are wanting to buy one, please duly remind them of the repercussions. This apply not just to Siberian Huskies but to all dog breeds. Owning a dog is heavenly and delightful, but it entails serious responsibility and commitment. You can still own one, in fact, you can even adopt one. But before proceeding, please be fully aware first of all its special needs.
