Bess was just a tiny pup when she somehow escaped from their home, a farmhouse in Edenbridge, Kent. Unfortunately, she got hit by a car and suffered extensive injuries. A Good Samaritan saw what happened and quickly took her to the Last Chance Animal Shelter, a facility operated by a charity rescue organization. Thanks to the quick action, her life was saved.
Vets at the shelter worked fast to close her wounds and fasten her broken bones in place. She received multiple stitches and even had pins placed on her neck. It was the area that sustained the most damage. Later on, she hated it when anyone touched her neck and didn’t like wearing a collar.
Longest shelter resident
The rescue group eventually found the dog’s owners. But they said their circumstances had changed, and they could not care for Bess anymore. They surrendered their pet to the group. That’s when her decade-old stay in the shelter began.
Because of the accident, Bess was traumatized. She didn’t trust anyone, even dogs. She was wary of strangers and would only tolerate the presence of those she knew. She becomes aggressive when someone touches her and turns her back to visitors. This made it difficult for her to get adopted.
Emotional plea
When her stay in the shelter became 10 years, the staff and management made an appeal to the public. It was very emotional and quickly became viral. Calls started pouring in, and some even came from different continents. A lot of people’s hearts were touched by her story.
Choosing from many candidates, the rescue organization picked a family from the south coast of England. Before formally adopting the dog, the family had to visit Bess six times and gain her trust. By the time they took the senior pooch home, the canine already felt comfortable with their company.
Finally, Bess found her home, and hopefully, it was her last one.
