Thanksgiving is ahead and it’s best if we prioritize our dog’s needs first before we get too busy. If you will be traveling to and fro, and you want the smoothest Thanksgiving ever, do apply the following tips:
1. Stick to routine.
Keep to your dog’s daily routine even while in transit. Feed your dog during the same schedule. The same goes for playing and exercising. Sticking to their routine will reduce their anxiety.
2. Have a dedicated safe space.
Your dog should have a dedicated safe space where they can hang out when things get too loud and busy during the festivities.
3. Exercise with your buddy.
To avoid restlessness, give your buddy an extra dose of exercise. This will prevent them from feeling too energetic and excited.
4. Consider a pre-thanksgiving meal.
Apart from following your dog’s regular feeding schedule, you should also give your dog a pre-Thanksgiving meal to discourage begging for food straight from the table.
5. Have your buddy’s favorite treats at hand.
Have treats that you could easily give just in case your dog will ask for some during the meal. The following will be perfect: plain-cooked carrots, sweet potatoes, or turkey.
6. Avoid all toxic foods.
Your dog should not have any of the following: grapes, onions, bones, chocolate, or any food with a high-fat content.
7. Be extra watchful.
Be a responsible guardian. Ensure that your dog stays indoors and avoid any slip-outs during the arrival of guests.
8. Educate your guests.
Your guests or fellow guests should be informed of your dog’s needs. Tell them the rules regarding feeding from the table and etc.
9. Soothe your buddy’s ears.
Dog’s ears are sensitive to loud noises. To soothe them, consider playing white noise or soothing music.
10. Plan for everything.
Have everything at hand. Bring everything that can soothe your dog just in case your buddy experiences severe stress or anxiety.
