Dr. Kwane Stewart is no ordinary veterinarian. For the last nine years, he spent his time looking and helping animal owners who can’t provide their pets the veterinary support and care they need.
It all began during the 2008 financial crisis that hit the United States. Dr. Stewart ran an animal hospital before becoming the county veterinarian in Modesto, California.
The 49-year-old veterinarian could have stayed in this career path, serving clients who have no problems paying the veterinary bills. But he chose to see the reality beyond the four walls of his clinic, and there he saw the bigger truth.
With more and more people becoming homeless because of the crisis, more animals need proper veterinary care. Sadly, these animals don’t get them because their owners can’t afford the expenses.
After seeing the problem, Dr. Stewart thought he couldn’t let this get worse. He began helping other people by opening a soup kitchen in 2011.
Later on, he offered free medical checkups for those who bring their pet to his clinic. When many people lined up at his clinic, he realized how immense the need for veterinary care was.
For cases that are easier to treat, Dr. Stewart pays for the costs. For more complicated issues, he opted for a more sustainable approach by setting up a GoFundMe page. Through this platform, he gets the funds for more high-cost treatments such as surgeries.
During his free time, Dr. Stewart goes around areas in California like Downtown San Diego and Skid Row, searching for homeless pet owners who need his help.
Since then, he earned the title ‘Street Vet,’ and he saved at least 400 animals, primarily dogs and cats.
We praise people like Dr. Stewart, a selfless man with love and compassion for animals and animal lovers from all walks of life. These challenging times call for more kindhearted, compassionate, and selfless souls for humans and animals. We need it more than ever!
