Now this is something that all countries in the world should follow! The Netherlands will forever be remembered in history as the first country with no stray dogs. Zero! Zilch! Nada! None! We are glad to share that all the dogs in the country have their own forever homes. Truly, nothing is impossible if there is political will!
So how did they do it? Through simple and basic steps that slowly changed the entire country’s landscape when it comes to attending to dog welfare. All steps were legally supported and persevered by the country’s government.
The first thing that the government did is the nationwide provision of free spaying and neutering service for dogs. With it, it launched a nationwide “Adopt, don’t shop!” campaign together with tax policies.
People who shopped for dogs were given very high taxes that effectively promoted adopting. Due to the immensely high taxes when it comes to buying dogs, citizens were encouraged to adopt and choose their fur baby from the 200 dog shelters in the country.
The country also implemented strict laws and regulations that required transparent government records of medical exams and vaccinations of dogs. Heavy penalties with imprisonment were all imposed upon citizens that commit any form or act of cruelty towards dogs.
As of press time and through the determination of government agencies and instrumentalities in The Netherlands, more than 90% of its residents now own dogs with not one dog staying at any dog shelter or rescue center.
If The Netherlands can do it, surely other countries can do it, too! It just takes perseverance and the strict implementation of laws from the government! This is truly hopeful and inspiring as a world where all dogs have forever homes is a world that everyone should aspire to have and belong to! When there’s a will, there’s a way!
