Firefighters don’t just deal with fires. When necessary, they also rescue pets that are in danger. Even if the operation takes a lot of time, they are more than willing to free cats, dogs, and other animals from sticky situations.
In Kentucky, one fire department exhausted almost everything that they had to rescue a dog named Gabby. The said pooch was trapped inside a tight sewer pipe, prompting a rescue operation that lasted three hours.
Pulling Gabby out of trouble
Earlier in April, Gabby ventured into the streets and stumbled upon her misfortune. Jamie Gifford, the assistant chief of operations for the Georgetown Fire Department, said that a neighbor actually saw the pup jump into the hole.
Charlene Revel, the dog’s fur mom, immediately called the fire department. The quick response of the rescuers was crucial, as Gabby was actually deaf.
Gifford detailed how the rescue went. Initially, firefighters looked into the vertical pipe and saw Gabby’s back. But every time they tried to reach her, the dog went further down the tight pipe. She kept doing it until she reached the horizontal pipe where extracting her would be challenging.
Rescuers attempted to lure Gabby back with peanut butter. However, the plan failed. The crew wasn’t able to get a rope around the dog’s body.
At this point, the only way to rescue Gabby was to dig into the ground. Neighbors offered help by lending firefighters shovels. Eventually, a local equipment company named Sunbelt Rentals lent the rescue team an excavator.
Gabby survives her ordeal
Ultimately, the rescuers reached the part of the pipe where Gabby was stuck. After three hours of trying to save the dog, the fire department finally got her out of trouble.
Gabby was covered with mud and sewage. She also had a cut around her neck. Nevertheless, she was free and in good condition.
The pup was then taken to a clinic where she received immediate medical attention. By the next day, she returned home.
