Meet Kan, an extremely obese malamute who even shocked the vet because of his very big size. He weighed over 60 kilograms and his waist circumference measured 40 inches. And the surprising part about this is that Kan’s dad is an actual gym trainer. And Kan himself is a mainstay at the gym where his dad worked – but of course, that didn’t mean that he did any exercise.
Kan always loved to eat but he never really loved moving. His dad tried to enroll him at the gym to get him up and running, even bought him exercise toys for motivation, but to no avail. He would get tired easily and he would end up lying down or napping for the rest of the day.
His owner tried to be mindful about his weight so he switched his food to diet feed. And then he kept taking him outside for walks hoping that he would shed some weight but it didn’t help that much. He also invited a friend named Maya, another malamute, but he never really budged and just kept to himself while Maya played around.
Dogs are usually active but his owner thought Kan might have been a cat in his past life which was why he only sits still.
So, Kan’s owner finally decided to enroll him in a gym specifically designed for dogs. Here he will be trained in a customized curriculum by a trainer who even studied overseas. After they completed his registration, they started doing obstacles in a slow-paced manner so that Kan would not feel overwhelmed.
But the key point in everything that they did was to always make him feel a sense of accomplishment whenever he completes it.
True enough, Kan started to find exercising interesting enough. After a month of training, his owner also did some treat hacks to keep him moving throughout the day. One was attaching a treat on a stick which was then attached to a hoodie that Kan wore. This way, he would be motivated to stand up and move until he gets the treat.
Before, Kan wouldn’t have given that much of a thought and just continue on with his peaceful life. But now, he started to get a bit more active and diligently doing his exercises with his dad. We’re all rooting for your weight loss journey, Kan.
