Shocked during her holiday backpack trip to Sri Lanka, British vet Janey Lowes made a decision that changed her life by moving abroad to save stray dogs.
Janey Lowes is a vet that got shocked upon seeing numerous injured stray dogs roaming about in Sri Lanka. She was heartbroken as to how the dogs are gravely injured and not being cared for. Deeply moved, she decided to stay and help each injured stray dog in the streets of Sri Lanka.
She left her stable job in New Castle and gave up her comfortable life to tend to stray dogs in Sri Lanka.
Initially, she would spend 18 months in the country until all her pocket money is drained. As life is affordable in Sri Lanka, her savings allowed her to live for more than a year without salary.
She returns to the UK every time she runs out of money. She would work and save and then return to UK to help dogs again and again.
Despite her limited resources, she was able to set up a charity to care for injured animals that roam around the streets.
Every day, Janey would ride a tuktuk around Sri Lanka to look for injured stray dogs that needs help. As she is a vet, she would provide first aid herself and give food and water to strays. Vet Janey names every stray dogs that she encounters. She has already helped 4,098 sick and injured dogs to fully recover and heal.
To date, her charity has also been able to neuter 4,497 dogs. They were also able to vaccinate 6,898 dogs against rabies.
As Sri Lanka is a developing country, the nation still lacks tough laws and better information when it comes to tending to animal welfare. Duly, vet Janey together with her co-volunteers also run outreach programs where they go from school to school to orient schools on how to tackle and improve the welfare of dogs in Sri Lanka.
This year, vet Janey’s charity is set to finish a hospital for stray dogs in Sri Lanka. Individuals interested to help may visit this link.
