Sam is a young Lab mix found tethered to a rebar close to a dam. When rescuers got to him, the water was almost up to his neck already. They had to work quickly to get him free. A vet’s examination later showed that the poor pooch suffered multiple broken bones and a displaced hip. They said the bones on his legs were injured because it likely resulted from trying to escape his predicament.
Because of the extent of his injuries, a nonprofit rescue organization called Nebraska’s Loving Animal Advocates took the dog in to get him treated and eventually find him a forever home.
Extensive care
To give him the constant care and attention he needed, Sam stayed in a foster home in Omaha. First-time foster volunteer Valerie Blackford took on the challenge of helping the dog recover.
Valerie said that when the abused pooch went under her care, he still had two broken legs and a urinary tract infection. He was also severely malnourished. But more importantly, he had the biggest heart she had seen in a dog. His capacity to love was boundless.
Sam didn’t let his horrifying past interfere with his affection toward humans. He loved playing with his foster mom and would spend hours cuddling with any human. He was very determined to have a bright future. His character inspired everyone around him to work even harder to get him a good life.
Day by day
Sam is still a long way from fully recovering. The vets are still waiting for him to grow to his adult size to determine if they can save his deformed leg. Valerie and Nebraska’s Loving Animal Advocates are dedicated to getting the young dog the help he needs. They have asked the online community for help covering his medical bills.
A resilient dog like Sam deserves to live without pain and discomfort.
