Let this story be a strong reminder to all to never leave their dogs unattended for long periods inside their vehicles.
Summer is here and the heat has been significantly insane in Europe. If not for the goodness of the people who reported the incident and the prompt attention that firefighters gave, Bertie the cockapoo could not have lived to tell the tale.
The shocking incident happened in Saffron Walden, Essex when an owner who went shopping left poor Bertie inside a sweltering hot car in the midst of the insane heatwave that Europe is experiencing. The heat that day registered to 77 degrees and poor Bertie was left alone locked inside the car.
What made the matter worse is the fact that apart from having all the windows closed, the car was parked under direct sunlight during lunch hour. Luckily, onlookers noticed how Bertie was already struggling and immediately called for rescue.
The owner was paged upon the arrival of the firefighters but seeing that it was taking too long for the owner to return, the firefighters took it upon themselves to force their way in. The firefighters were on time for they were able to save the very thirsty and anxious dog.
The firefighters grabbed the opportunity to publicly remind everyone to be extra responsible when it comes to the welfare of their pets. In the UK, leaving a dog unattended in a vehicle is not illegal. However, an owner can face six months of imprisonment with an unlimited fine if their dog ends up sick or dies due to such incident as such is considered as a manifest form of animal cruelty.
Incidents of not just dogs but babies being left alone locked inside cars have been increasing. Considering the significant heat that all are experiencing this year, it’s high time for all to be extra cautious and aware.
