Food keeps dogs going, but not all foods are safe for them. There are foods that will help them in as much as there at foods that can harm them. So, what are these foods? The following are foods which are indicated whether it is safe for dogs or not.
1. Oats
Oats are one of the best food dogs can eat. This is because oats are a great source of fiber and a good grain substitute for dogs who are allergic to wheat. Oats are best when taken by older dogs as it has the capacity to regulate their bowel movement.
2. Sardines
Sardines are good food for dogs too since sardines is enriched with protein, calcium, iron, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA which are all essential to the growth and development of dogs. Besides, sardines contain the lowest mercury when it comes to fishes.
3. Cucumber
Cucumber is another good treat to dogs. Aside from being light and refreshing, cucumber is also hydrating to dogs as it contains a lot of water. The cucumber can be cut into small cubes and can be served alongside with Xylitol-free peanut butter for an amazing treat after playtime.
4. Tomato
Ripe tomatoes are safe, but green tomatoes alongside with its stems and leaves are not safe to dogs. This is because they contain solanine and tomatine which can harm dogs when consumed in large quantities.
5. Garlic
Garlic isn’t advisable for dog consumption because it contains thiosulphate. Thiosulphate is a compound which is found toxic to dogs. When eaten excessively, it can cause anemia to dogs. If it can’t be avoided that the food you serve to your dog contains garlic, make sure that the garlic is just in its eight dosages for your dog.
6. Spinach
Spinach isn’t exactly something that should be served to dogs. This is because it contains oxalate which can cause kidney problems to dogs when eaten excessively. Feeding your dog with spinach occasionally is somewhat good as spinach is a good source of vitamins A, B, C, and K, iron, antioxidants, beta-carotene.
Just a little reminder, the foods mentioned above aren’t suggested to replace the normal and balanced diet of dogs. These are just a great alternative or a sweet treat for dogs every once in a while. At the end of everything, make sure that you have nothing but the best to your dogs.
