It’s part of our responsibility as dog owners to feed our pet dogs. However, we have to remember that this is only one part of the many responsibilities of a dog owner. These animals rely on their owners to keep them healthy and happy.
Unfortunately, many people realize the number of things they have to do for their dogs to keep them healthy until it’s too late. Eventually, they end up having a dog with health problems and they end up surrendering them to an animal shelter.
A Chihuahua named Rosemary was surrendered by her family because she was too fat. Rosemary’s family only fed her and didn’t exercise. It came to a point when Rosemary could barely move because of her weight. Not wanting to do the work to help Rosemary get healthy again, her family decided to surrender her to an animal shelter while insisting that she had health issues and that she was already old.
The animal shelter staff and volunteers could tell that there was something off about the family’s story about Rosemary. They accepted Rosemary in their care and the staff made a promise to Rosemary that she would be able to run again. When she was placed on the weighing scale, animal shelter staff were shocked to find out that she was 24-pounds.
For a dog her size, Rosemary was more than double the recommended weight. The animal shelter staff did everything to help her recover. She was placed on a strict low-calorie diet and was also exercised. Rosemary soon started to show results by losing weight.
Because of her weight, Rosemary needed to exercise on an underwater treadmill to keep pressure off her joints. She did this twice a week and she also went out in the yard to play with the other dogs at the shelter, which also helped a lot.
Rosemary soon started to become more active and happier as her weight gradually decreased. When she first came into the shelter, walking outside to use the potty was a struggle. She didn’t have the energy to do anything and would easily get tired. Now, she’s a happy dog who loves running and playing.
Rosemary is now ready to find a forever home thanks to all the animal shelter staff and volunteers who helped her on her weight loss journey. It’s truly amazing and heartwarming to see Rosemary’s transformation. Here’s a video telling Rosemary’s full story and how she was given a second chance by the wonderful people at the animal shelter.
