Ever since she was a child, Elizabeth Feldhausen had always regarded herself as a cat person. She grew up having a lot of feline pets, and her parents said her first word was ‘kitty’.
As an adult, her experience with a disabled cat led her to create Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary. It is a cage-free animal rescue and rehabilitation facility located in Wisconsin. They take care of senior and disabled felines. Elizabeth also runs a coffee shop that is a cat sanctuary as well.
She has dedicated her life to helping cats and has yet to really work with dogs. That all changed when she learned about a dog abandoned by his family.
Left behind
Rose is a five-year-old Pit Bull left by her family in an overcrowded local shelter in Indiana. Her owners moved to another town and didn’t want to bring her along. Sadly, her new environment had a negative impact on her. The unwanted pooch became very anxious and scared of everything around her.
Her first step to a new life began when a Wisconsin-based animal rescue organization called Apple Valley Pit Crew took an interest in Rose and got her out of the cramped shelter. Her rescuers then wrote a post about her story, and that’s when Elizabeth heard about the lonely pooch.
The dog’s story broke her heart, and she became determined to help her.
Foster fail
Elizabeth reached out to the rescue group and offered to foster Rose. At that time, the Pit Bull was already with another foster family. But that didn’t work out, and the dog moved in with her after a few weeks. Before that, the kind cat lady ensured the pooch was fine living with her own four cats.
Elizabeth said she did not do anything special with Rose. She treated her the same way she treated her cats. She showed her a lot of love, spent a lot of time with her, and made sure that she had exercise and was well-fed.
Soon, Rose grew attached to her foster mom and followed everything she said. The Pit Bull adjusted well to her new home and adored playing with her feline siblings. With so much progress, Elizabeth hated to see her go and become anxious again. So she adopted her, promising never to let her be alone again.
